I loved Classic ASP! But after many years of using it exclusively, I am switching to PHP. Here's why.

Classic ASP was the first web programming 'language' that I learned to use. It was very easy to learn, because it feels so much like the English language in its syntax.

When I first began to study it, Classic ASP was the latest and greatest. NET was yet to be released. PHP was fairly popular, but Perl still ruled the day. I chose to learn Classic ASP instead of Perl due to its simplicity. I liked how all I had to do was drop a script into a web folder, and it worked.

My first coding project was customizing a free Classic ASP classified ads system that was called DUclassifieds. I think I still have a zip file of that around somewhere. After that, I wanted a pedigree generator for my horse website, so I bought a copy of the first edition of ASPmaker.

I continued to upgrade ASPmaker every time a new version came out, until it became so complex that it was no longer suitable for website creation. Today, it is a tool that is fine for intranets, but I have gone back to using ASPmaker version 2! And I use it only to save time, to spit out code without having to write it by hand.

Several years went by, and Microsoft abandoned Classic ASP and moved on to NET. I may take the trouble to learn NET someday, but the one issue I have with both Classic ASP and NET is that they are proprietary products that have to be run on Windows Servers. I always said that if Microsoft stopped making its server software offer Classic ASP as an option, then I would switch to PHP.

Then this past spring, one of my clients hired me to make a new classified ads system for their site. Their site was already done in PHP by their previous webmaster, so I decided that this would be a good time to leap into learning PHP.

To ease the transition, I wanted a code generator, but most of them that I tried either did not produce the easily-customized code I wanted, or they were too complicated or too expensive. I finally settled on Easygen, but now that I am comfortable with PHP, I just use notepad.

I was delighted to discover that PHP is actually quite similar to Classic ASP in logic, and that it is easy to learn. Moreover, because it is open source, it is extremely easy to find information about how to use it to accomplish various tasks.

I am also pleased with how quickly PHP scripts are rendered by the server. There is a noticeable difference in the speed with which PHP responds compared to Classic ASP. I like all the built-in functions that PHP offers.

Very early in my Classic ASP career, I came across BuildApp, an extraordinary piece of work that can be used to generate Classic ASP pages to display Access database tables. Within the past year, I saw that the application had been mostly abandoned by its original host, so I asked its creator for permission to host the files here. He granted the permission and I am flattered to be able to offer it to you. I hope someday perhaps to create a similar set of scripts for generating PHP pages. If you know of such a thing, please let me know. I do know of one website that offers something similar, but it has very limited functionality without paging and without searches and so on.

Little did I anticipate, back when I got started as a coder, that someday we would have Facebook and Twitter. In a way, those services have complicated our lives even while they offer us coders more opportunities.

I think Facebook has a very "beta" feel to it, and I am amazed at how difficult it is to find solutions to specific problems when writing applications for it. I have started a site, www.FacebookGeeWhiz.com, to share some of what I learn with you. At the same time, it is really nice to know how much more attention we can bring to our websites by setting up applications that draw in visitors from Facebook.

I love Twitter! Why? Cuz the Twitter development team is such a big ol' huggable bunch of lugs, that's why! They do an amazing job of staying in touch with their coder community, and this lets us all feel like we're part of something important. (As for Facebook--heh, what do you expect from a bunch of Harvard dropouts who are barely out of diapers?)

Back when I got started in web development, I was motivated by a desire to make applications for my horse websites. Now, years later, I am more wrinkled, fatter, and have grayer hair, and I now enjoy coding as a primary business activity. My son has joined me in my consulting business as a fellow developer, which is fun. We work in the same room but most of our communication is by email, and by hearing each other laugh at ICanHazCheeseBurger.com over the divider.

I think that coding for websites has made me smarter, even though I am aging. I think I am a lot sharper than I was when I was young. Which may not be saying much, but oh well. I would rather be coding than almost anything else. Most other activities feel like a waste of time and make me feel impatient to get back to the keyboard. Sometimes, I get so many cool ideas, I wonder if my brain will pop! So many ideas, so little time.
